Why the Tank A Day Challenge?
The Tank A Day Challenge aims to encourage water-saving practices within primary schools, as well as teach young Australians about the water cycle and the importance of water harvesting, conservation and management.
BlueScope Steel wants to help make a difference at the grass roots as to how Australians manage water.
By engaging primary school children in the Challenge, BlueScope aims to empower the next generation with the message that they, too, can help Australia manage water better.
The Challenge teaches young Australians - and through them the broader community - how to protect our precious water resources.
BlueScope Steel is taking action to progressively reduce its effect on the environment, and has taken a leadership role in water conservation and recycling.
At our Port Kembla Steelworks in Wollongong, we’ve shown we want to make a difference by partnering with Sydney Water to set a new Australian benchmark for our industry. We’ve cut our use of fresh water at Port Kembla by 50 per cent —so 98 per cent of water used in steel processing or cooling is now recycled or salt water.
In Victoria, a major water-recycling project will supply BlueScope Steel's Western Port plant at Hastings. This will see the Western Port plant cut its fresh water use by over 60 per cent or 660 mega-litres a year – that’s equal to the annual water consumption of around 3,000 homes.
Now we’re inviting every primary school across Australia to join us by taking up the BlueScope Steel Tank A Day Challenge and kick-starting their own water conservation efforts.
