Wattle Park Primary School celebrates the Tank a Day Challenge launch

28 August 2008

Wattle Park Primary School in Burwood Victoria has been leading the way in water conservation and, in recognition of its efforts, played host for the launch of the second round of the BlueScope Tank a Day Challenge on 13 August.

On launch day over three hundred students, teachers and parents enjoyed a special visit from ‘Bluey’ the Rainchaser and the TODAY Show. Together they showed some of the school’s environmental initiatives which range from innovative water saving projects to regenerated garden beds.

Wattle Park Primary School was inspired to further its water saving journey after being selected to receive a 27,000L Pioneer GALAXY® rainwater tank in the BlueScope Tank a Day Challenge. Water collected in the rainwater tank has been used to regenerate garden beds which suffered in the past because the school struggled to water them. Now the garden beds are watered solely from the rainwater tank, after the school redirected down pipes from four classrooms to the garden.

The school community has invested large amounts of time to help students and parents learn about the latest water saving techniques in schools. This knowledge has been used to implement simple and cost effective water saving initiatives such as using water captured from taps and sinks to feed plants.

As a part of its environmental journey the school has planted fifty gum trees to help absorb carbon dioxide and reduce the impact of its carbon emissions. Each year students take part in a regeneration project which, in the past, has included planting native trees around the local creek to encourage habitat to return to the area.
